Promotional video for Plant shop based in Edinburgh

At Strength in Motion Films, we love creating videos that bring local businesses to life, and working with Grow Urban, one of Edinburgh’s most enchanting plant shops, was no exception.

With two charming locations in Fountainbridge and Stockbridge, Grow Urban isn’t just a plant shop; it’s magical place, a cosy haven where plants, coffee and beauty come together.

For this promotional video project, our goal was simple: capture the magic of Grow Urban’s lush interiors, highlight the variety of plants, and reflect the warm, quirky atmosphere of their café.

The Vision: Simplicity Meets Charm

When we met with Grow Urban’s owner, one thing stood out: his love for the shop’s unique vibe. He gave us full creative freedom but had a clear vision, no talking, no narration, just stunning visuals that showed the shop’s beauty and cosiness. Oh, and a big sprinkle of quirkiness, of course!

After brainstorming, we decided to tell the story of a day in the life of a customer. From stepping into the shop and being mesmerized by the greenery to enjoying a coffee in a cosy nook and leaving with the perfect plant.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Perfect Shot

Bringing this vision to life was both exciting and challenging. Here’s a glimpse into the process:

Pre-Production
  • Collaborated with Grow Urban to align on creative direction and tone.
  • Developed a shot list to ensure we captured every detail.
  • Hired a professional actor to embody the ideal customer experience.
Filming Day
  • Space Constraints: With little room to maneuver and the shop open to customers, we opted for handheld filming and gimbal work to keep movements fluid and natural.
  • Lighting: Artificial lights were out of the question. We timed the shoot for mid-afternoon to capture Edinburgh’s golden hour and used the shop’s practical lighting to enhance the cozy atmosphere.
  • Quirky Touches: To emphasize the shop’s personality, we filmed staff waving enthusiastically (and humorously!) at the camera.
  • Drone Magic: For exterior shots, a drone showcased both shop locations and their surrounding neighborhoods.
Post-production brought everything together:
  • Color Grading: Rich greens and warm oranges emphasized the natural beauty of the plants and the shop’s inviting atmosphere.
  • Music: Inspired by Yann Tiersen’s Amélie score, a French piano and accordion soundtrack perfectly complemented the visuals and added on the quirkiness.

The final video has been a hit for Grow Urban, doubling as a homepage hero piece and a compelling ad for their social media campaigns. The quirky yet professional tone resonates with their customers, driving foot traffic and online engagement.

Why It Works:
  1. Local Focus: Highlighting two key locations in Edinburgh for maximum local impact.
  2. Visual Storytelling: A no-narration approach lets the shop’s atmosphere speak for itself.
  3. Authenticity: Real customer interactions during the shoot added a relatable, lived-in feel.

Location Location

To showcase Grow Urban’s charming locations in Fountainbridge and Stockbridge, we captured breathtaking drone footage. These aerial shots not only highlight the shop exteriors but also situate them within the vibrant streets of Edinburgh, giving viewers a sense of place and inviting them to visit in person.

Mood and Colours

Time of the day for the ideal light and tailor made colour grading were two essential factors in really showing the magic athomosphere of this place.
